Obituary for Alfonso Cartagena

Alfonso Cartagena, 82 years, of Southampton NJ passed into the Lord God’s loving embrace peacefully on Friday, January 20, 2023 at Virtua Mount Holly Hospital surrounded by his caring family. He was born in Orocovis, Puerto Rico on February 2, 1940, son of the late Pedro (Pello) Cartagena and Saturnina Melendez. Alfonso had been an area resident since the late 1960’s. He was an active parishioner of the Cathedral of St. Mary of the Assumption, Trenton, where he was a volunteer at church functions and a member of the Holy Name Society. He retired after working for Kramer Co. of Trenton. In his younger years he played baseball for the Boricuas Team. He loved playing dominoes, roasting pigs (lechón asado) watching his Phillies games but most of all spending time with his family.
Surviving him is his loving and devoted wife of 63 years Irma Cartagena, his loving beautiful 8 children and their spouses, Maria D Torres (Roberto), Evelyn Cartagena, Miguel A Cartagena (Margie), Edgardo Cartagena (Brenda), Jaime Cartagena (Licelot), Janette Colby (Michael), Nelson Cartagena, Hiram Cartagena (Lee), Grandfather of 16, Evelisse, Victor Jr, Hiram Jr, Henry, José, Lindsey, Kayla, Eddie Jr, Christina, Jaime, Lacey, Alyssa, Mia, Alaiah, Joel, Matthew, 22 great grandchildren, Gabriel, Julian, Giani, Jayden, Nayelis, Juniedyz, Henry, AJ, Sophie, Chloe, Damian, Mila, Remi, Dyllan, Owen, Leah, Luna, Lucy, Shane, Logan, Cash, Trey; and his Brothers, sister, nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives. He was loved by all who knew him and he will be greatly missed.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday January 27, 2023, at 10:30AM at Saint Mary’s Cathedral, 151 North Warren St., Trenton. Relatives and Friends may visit with the family from 8:00AM-10:30AM at the church. Interment will follow the mass in Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery, 400 Woolsey St., Hamilton.
